The digital marketing strategy has become the most common, effective, and simple marketing strategy that most businesses would implement. In fact, 95% of Small businesses are interested to increase their digital marketing spending, particularly on social media as a digital marketing channel (The Manifest 2019).
Given its widespread acceptance, most people, including ourselves, tend to overlook the negative aspects of digital marketing. Thus, today’s blog will primarily discuss the limitations to the use of digital marketing, particularly the use of social media.
The risk of information leaks is one of the most common limitations of digital marketing, especially when using social media. In fact, as 47% of social media users have seen more spam in their feeds, and 79% of the spams include fake news and cybercrime, social media has become one of the ways for hackers to perform cyber-attacks (Zantal – Wiener n.d).
This demonstrates the potential risk of the business’s information as well as its customers being leaked due to the business’ use of social media platforms with the intention to promote its business.
Following to the risk of consumer information being exposed to hackers, it will lead to the lack of customer’s trust towards the brand as information leakage can have a negative impact on customer and business relationships.
Furthermore, Dole (2020) stated that one of the disadvantages of implementing digital marketing is a lack of trust, which frequently relates to the issue of safety and assurance. Hence, despite of the intention to promote the business, it has the potential to destroy customer trust in the brand and, also eventually threaten the brand’s reputation.
‘Negative Feedback Spread on Social Media’ by Aurellia Vania
Being actively engaged in social media for marketing purposes also creates a risk to tarnish the business’s brand in overnight. Mainly, because social media allows people to freely express their opinion publicly, including reviewing a product or service being promoted.
Furthermore, with the ability to share negative feedback with other social media users all over the world, negative feedback spread quickly and uncontrollably. Therefore, social media can harm a company’s reputation.
Overall, using social media for digital marketing can be both favourable and harmful to a company. In fact, businesses should not rely solely on one marketing strategy when other options are available. Therefore, businesses should implement a blended marketing strategy to overcome the disadvantages of each marketing strategy.
Are you aware of the viral marketing virus’s existence? It is definitely not a new virus; it has been around since 1976 and, it may be very contagious especially, there is the five types of viral marketing viruses that exist today which are value virus, cunning virus, shy virus, spiral virus, and unpleasant virus, as well as the five principles that must be present for the virus to be transmitted: social popularity, emotion, general, practical value, and stories (Mehdi 2021).
Benefits of viral marketing by Aurellia Vania
Most businesses, however, benefit from this virus because viral marketing has a positive impact on consumer purchase intention. Furthermore, it increases brand awareness and recognition. In fact, when compared to other marketing strategies, viral marketing has been deemed one of the most effective strategies. The social media platform is one of the main reasons why viral marketing is so easily spread around the world.
The presence of social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube provides more trustworthy, credible, and honest marketing messages (Puriwat and Tripopsakul 2021). It also makes it easier for audiences to spread the messages. Therefore, social media has played an important role in speeding the spread of viral marketing.
Drawback of Viral Marketing by Aurellia Vania
However, there are some disadvantages to using viral marketing strategy, such as unexpected results, such as creating a negative buzz rather than a positive buzz. While negative buzz can increase brand awareness, it can also harm the brand’s reputation. Furthermore, viral marketing cannot be controlled, so if the messages are perceived negatively among the public, it will be difficult for the business to keep things under control. Eventually it will have a negative impact on the brand’s reputation.
Lastly, there is no fix method for businesses to evaluate the effectiveness of this strategy. In other words, the company is unable to determine whether the increase in sales is the result of the viral advertising strategy. Hence, business may carefully consider the messages that would like to be shared when applying this strategy. Overall, viral marketing has both advantages and disadvantages that marketers must consider in addition to understanding why it is viral.
Did you know anyone who doesn’t have a mobile phone? Well, not for me, even my 86 years old grandmother does use a Nokia phone. In fact, more than 90% of the global population are a cell phone user (Turner 2022). Yeah, that’s huge percentage of people owing a mobile phone globally and definitely, marketers would not miss this opportunity.
‘Mobile Marketing’ Photo made by Aurellia Vania
With the advancement of mobile marketing technology, SMS is no longer the only mobile marketing strategy available, but also App-based marketing, location-based marketing, Voice marketing, In-game advertisement, proximity/Bluetooth marketing, and QR codes.
These various mobile marketing strategies can be applied easily for most of business since most of the people in this world is a mobile phone user. Furthermore, mobile marketing has a significant influence in increasing consumer purchase intention (Alameer, Suhluli and Khalufi 2022). This shows that marketers will continuously utilise mobile marketing in the future
However, not all mobile phone users will accept this strategy, particularly because they consider their phone to be a personal device. Furthermore, one of the most common concerns people have about this strategy is the privacy issue.
It is because they viewed that this strategy could result in the disclosure of personal information such as a bank account, home address, and medical history. Therefore, people have a negative perception of mobile marketing in terms of privacy.
To eliminate the negative perception of mobile marketing, there are 3 suggestions provided:
Gain a customer’s trust
Trust has become the main factors for people’s acceptance towards the mobile marketing (Nguyen 2021). To gain customer’s trust, firstly marketer can create a solid relationship by showing them an honest and transparency.
In addition, marketers can emphasise the safety privacy regulation to its customer.
Use a permission marketing system
This concept simply refers to giving the customer the option of receiving promotional messages or not.
This demonstrates that the brand respects the customer’s choice and can develop a better relationship with the customer.
Give a mobile marketing awareness
It is a workshop in which the benefits and purpose of marketers in adopting mobile marketing will be discussed.
It can also address how customer privacy can be protected to be more effective and persuasive in changing their opinion of mobile marketing.
With the growing interest in implementing a digital marketing strategy in business, many SMEs overlook the use of search engine optimisation (SEO) and paid search marketing.
In fact, only 49% (Clark 2021), and 45% (Guta 2021) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) use SEO and paid search marketing in their digital marketing strategies, respectively.
Therefore, this blog will discuss the definition and benefits of SEO and paid search marketing, as well as the steps to effectively implement digital analytics to measure the effectiveness of digital marketing that has been implemented.
SEO is the process of increasing the visibility of a website on search engines when people are looking for a similar product or service to the business. There are numerous advantages to employing SEO as a digital marketing strategy. For example, it target on quality traffic, is free, generates more clicks than the pay per click (PPC) model, improves public relations efforts, and assists businesses in competing. (Khedkar and Khedkar 2021).
Paid search marketing is a digital marketing strategy in which businesses pay search engines to have their advertisements appear higher on relevant search engine results pages (SERPs) with PPC being the most used form of paid search marketing.
PPC allows SMEs to reach the right audiences, build strong brand awareness, control marketing budgets, generate high ROI, and cost-effective marketing methods.
Digital analytics is important for businesses to adopt, especially for SMEs. As it allows them to identify and understand their customers’ behaviour, which enables the SME to improve, predict, and understand its customers’ needs. Furthermore, it also enables the SME to have a better understand the market situation as well as its competitors. Thus, SMEs should use digital analytics to assess the effectiveness of digital marketing plans.
3 methods for SME to effectively implement digital analytics:
Developed the campaign objective.
To have a clear goal, it should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely (SMART).
Determine Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
After defining the KPIs for which they are aiming, the SME must determine which KPIs to prioritise.
Evaluation of campaign effectiveness
SME can select and use a platform for monitoring and measuring marketing performance, such as Google Analytics, HubSpot, Adobe Marketing Cloud, or other analytics platforms.
This week’s blog will discuss the importance of using digital marketing to promote a product, how to write a digital marketing proposal, and why and how to effectively communicate with stakeholders.
How many times have you been interrupted while watching a YouTube video or a friend’s Instagram story by an advertisement? I’m sure most of us have had this experience. Digital marketing advertisements reach consumers not only through social media platforms, but also through search engines, email, and websites.
Other benefits of digital marketing for businesses include the ability to connect with customers through social media, instant data availability that can be easily analysed, and the ability to reach audiences globally and anytime (Jothi 2019). Moreover, 155% of consumers are more likely to search for the brand being promoted online (Marino 2022).
All of this highlights the importance of digital marketing as a strategy that marketers should employ. Before using digital marketing to promote a business, however, marketers must first create a digital marketing proposal for the company. Specifically, to ensure that the marketer’s ideas are clearly delivered to address the established goal.
There are 6 steps suggested in writing a digital marketing proposal as following:
Set specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, and time-bound goals (SMART).
Identify the target audiences
Conduct extensive research to identify the company’s strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats.
Determine the campaign’s budget, digital marketing channels, and timeline.
Begin drafting the digital marketing strategy.
Use a template to create plans that are appealing, simple, and appropriate.
Following that, you will present the proposal to the stakeholders. Stakeholders are people or parties who have an interest in a company and can influence or be influenced by it (Fernando 2022). There are two types of stakeholders: external (suppliers and customers) and internal stakeholders (employee and investor).
In this case, the proposal will be shared with external stakeholders to assess the effectiveness of the digital marketing proposal. Thus, it is important to maintain effective communication with stakeholders.
Emails and e-newsletters, online or virtual presentations, project summary reports, and group video calls are all effective ways to communicate with stakeholders. Furthermore, developing positive relationships with stakeholders allows the company to gain their support and trust. Hence, there is nothing to lose by keeping a good relationship with stockholders.
The topic for this week will be understanding the digital consumer, communities, and influencers in the context of online shopping.
Have you recently purchased something online? Have you ever browsed for a product or service on the internet? Then you are a digital consumer, as it refers to an e-consumer who searches for and purchases products on the Internet using any type of mobile device (Tkaczyk 2016).
In fact, you are not the only one, but many other people are also a digital consumer. According to Australia Post data, in 2021, 81% of all Australian households have purchased online, with 5.4 million households doing so monthly.
With many other people involved as digital consumers, it is reasonable to assume that the digital consumer plays an important role in increasing a company’s sales. Marketers must therefore be aware of the factors that may influence their online purchasing behaviour, such as the influence of online communities and influencer marketing.
Online communities are made up of people who share a common interest or goal to foster a sense of belonging. With an online community, such as Uscreen, Quora, or a Facebook group, consumers can review and share their experiences online, allowing other consumers to gain information, become more aware, and trust the product. In other words, online communities facilitate electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM).
In fact, eWOM has a significant impact on consumer purchase intentions as it builds trust and raises brand awareness for customers (Sulthana & Vasantha 2019). Thus, similarly, online communities will be beneficial to the business to be adopted.
Influencer marketing influences customer purchasing behaviour by hiring or collaborating with social media influencers or content creators to not only act as models, but also to recommend of a product or service to audiences. It is generally conducted by sharing their experience or providing a honest review of the product or service that they have used to their audiences.
This is also regarded as one of the most efficient methods of increasing customer purchasing intent. Mostly because the influencer’s honest review of the product or service conveys to the customer a sense of authenticity, credibility, and trust. Furthermore, these three factors have been identified as the primary drivers of customer interest in purchasing the product (Lisichkova and Othman 2017). It also indicates that influencer marketing has a significant impact on customer purchasing behaviour.
The term “Social Media” (SM) is no longer a foreign concept to most of us, especially the younger generation who has practically grown up with it. Despite its original purpose of sharing, socialising, and building relationships between people, social media has been widely used by businesses as a marketing strategy.
SMM is the use of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to increase brand awareness, increase sales, and providing a better customer service. In fact, as April 2021, there are 4.33 billion people are actively on social media (Kemp 2021), with more than half of population in earth are active on social media platforms has allow businesses with the opportunity to use social media to communicate with and build a better customer relationship.
Furthermore, SMM has become an effective and powerful method of influencing customer’s purchase intention and brand loyalty by featuring or collaborating with Instagram influencers or celebrities to endorse the product (Laksamana 2018).
Is SMM always an effective tool?
Although social media marketing is popular, it is ineffective if not well planned; therefore, marketers must be creative in creating content and aware of the value that they want to convey to their customers.
In fact, content is not created to promote a product, rather, it is a branding method that allows its target audiences to be attracted, involved, and familiar with the brand (Plessis 2017). Some creative social media content ideas include hosting a giveaway event, hosting a Q&A session, going behind the scenes, and many more. With interesting, unique, and appealing content, it can capture the customer’s attention and make them aware of the brand.
Another reason to use social media as a marketing strategy is to develop, maintain, and establish relationships between the brand and the customer. It is only possible if both parties have faith in each other. Therefore, the content being created must have value as it gives the customer an idea or impression of the brand identity and the product that being promoted.
Limitation of SMM
However, there are some drawbacks to using SMM that should be considered, such as negative comments that can harm a brand’s reputation, the possibility of customer privacy information leakage and hacking, and it is time-consuming because it requires constant online engagement.
“Exercising, cooking and even cleaning are the activities I can do while having online class”
Online learning has been conducted on for most Australian universities and colleges since the beginning of this year, and not all students like the idea of home learning. In particular, most International Students feel that there are unfair elements in the payment of the university fee.
Jocelyn Calandra (19), an international student from Indonesia who never set her feet in Sydney as she just started her Foundation Course in University of New South Wales (UNSW) Global on March, say “there is no reduction on the paying the college’s fee and yet I will never able the opportunity to use any of the services and facilities provided by the college”.
In fact, “it’s sometimes frustrated for me to search for the material that I need online, as I prefer to go to the library.” Being unable to enjoy all the facilities provided by the College, and yet still having to pay the full price, may be unfair to her, but not everyone feels the same as her.
Nguyen Ngoc Thao My (19), a first-year student in University Technology Sydney (UTS) who from Vietnam said, “There are more services that I received from University than before and those services help me to get through this situation’’. Services such as Online learning centre (OCL) has allowing Vietnamese student to receive help with the academic learning from the staff. However, this service is not available in other countries besides China and Vietnam.
It may take time for most international students to be able to cope with online learning, and more effort is needed compared to local students. Due to the pandemic, the majority of international students are in their home country and the time zone difference has impacted their daily routine.
Calandra says “it is totally weird for me to be the only person in my family to have a different schedule” as sometimes she has morning class which is at 8 a.m. (AEST) and need to be awake and be ready for class at 5 a.m (WIB).
In addition, for a medical student, Seysomaly Heng (19) who need to do most of her practical experiment online feels that it is difficult as to set up her own instrument and follow the procedure while doing it at home. She also adds, “it is just like a self-learning with an addition of me watching my lecturer who giving an instruction on Zoom”.
“There are always so much work I need to prepare before class, on of it is to make sure my internet concection is on and sometimes there would be any of my family member who may disturb me” said Heng.
However, remote learning still could be really enjoyable and saving a lot of their time. Nguyen Ngoc talks about the time she can spend with her family while having class at home. “There is more time that I have spent with my family now and in fact, sometimes we go for a vacation within in Vietnam and I still be able to attend class”. The bonding with her family has allowing her to spend more quality time with them compared to before the pandemic.
Having online class while working out, taken by Aurellia Vania (2020)
Similarly, Heng who feels remote learning enables her to do more activities which she enjoys such as doing simple workout while listening to the lecturer. “Exercising, cooking and even cleaning are the activities which I can do while having online class”. As a result, she feels that she has develop a multitasking skill. “I am still engaging with the class’s activity while I am cooking and there were once when I actually the teacher wants me to turn the camera on and seeing me with an apron”.
Moreover, Calandra, who also has similar experience, while cleaning her pet’s dirt and, unfortunately, the teacher wants to see every student’s face, and when she turns on the camera, most of her peers are shocked and laughed. “I didn’t realise that there was a dirt mark on my t-shirt, and I just turned on the camera, and then, without knowing anything, most of my peers were surprised and texted me through an individual zoom chat to let me know that my clothes had my dog’s waste.”
It may seem unethical to do this while having a class, but it’s common for a student to actually do another activity behind the camera. “It’s not just me who can have fun with my family while having an online class, there’s a lot more people doing that,” Nguyen Ngoc says. Heng also adds, “Most of my peers, I know, will also do other activities they enjoy while learning online.”
The research conducted last year by Andrew Lepp, Jacob E. Barkley, Aryn C. Karpinski, and Shweta Singh has shown that students who attending online classes tend to be less engaged in the classroom and have more engaged online or offline activities compared than student who are in the face to face class.
There is a viral photo of a grab driver attending his online class between delivering food to the Philippines. Francis John Ax Valerio told Clara Rosales that time management is the most important thing, as he would take a pause from the delivering if there is online class. He is working in order to support his family and at the same time he does not want to miss his education. Hence, has decided to use his time wisely by juggling between work and study.
For some student, they simply view online class something that is less serious, due to there is no presence of lecturer. “Sometimes it just feels like I am watching a live video instead if actually feel like having a class.’’ And again, listening and watching the two hours lecture or even longer than that through Zoom has resulting most of the student to feel boring and tired.
“Normally, in class, my friend and I can have a conversation or discussion about the lecturer’s topic, but there is less interaction between my friend and I”, Nguyen Ngoc says. This the reason why most of the student are doing other activities to keep them engaging in class.
Calandra’s experience is unimaginable that she also does not have a friend from her current class “ever since the foundation course began, I have never experienced going to campus and even never been to Australia, while in the zoom, I am barely approaching my classmate because I don’t know who and what kind of people they are, and now I still do not anyone who is in my class and have no friend.” Perhaps she is shy of asking people who she knows about the text, but it is more about feeling insecure rather than shy.
Even Nguyen Ngoc who also known to be a friend girl among her friends, also feel the same about it. She says, “the most difficult problem about having class online is the struggle of making new friend and expanding social relationship”. This is just one of the ugliness of learning online that has impacted the student’s life. “I feel become discourage as I cannot discuss certain topic that I do not understand with other peers” Heng adds.
Although it seems sorrowful to have no friend but most of the student still finding it interesting about having class online. In fact, it could be a possibility of student having a remote learning in the future and not going back to the campus anymore. “things are absolutely changing and evolving over time and I am excited to see in 10 years later if people still willingly to go to campus or not?” Heng tells me.
Calandra has also mention that she is adapting pretty well with online learning and other activities “I feel it is new normal to see my friends and other people online through Zoom or Google Meet”.
Overall, there have been many different online learning experiences for every university student. The lack of access to school facilities, the challenge of preparing classes, doing other activities to save time and also having less social interaction with others have made them different this year compared to other years. These are all interesting and unique experiences that will last a long time in their memory. On top of it, they expect something different in terms of delivering the lesson in the future.
The purpose of this podcast is to address the benefit and the problem of the impact of social media on politics.
In this podcast, I suggest that social media is reviving the idea of the public sphere in modern society and increasing the number of voters during the election campaign. On the other hand, I also feel that politicians might take advantage of social media to manipulate others to believe in them by spreading fake news which threaten the idea of democracy.
At the beginning of the writing my podcast, I am still unsure on what is the impact of social media on politic, hence I did many of research through reading a journal article as well as the e-book.
By reading some of these sources, it deepens my understanding on how social media able to impact the politics. In fact, I spent many hours to just find the right article which able to support my idea.
To justify all of my assumptions that I mention above, I need to have a scholarly resource. Hence, I referenced from journal article and also from e-book.
With all the scholarly resources I have had, it allows me to have more understanding about the content that I needed to write, and it also acts as evidences so that the listener of my podcast can trust in my statement. I used to do an essay where I need more than two scholarly references so this is not a challenging problem for me.
Besides, scholarly references, I also used some references from twitter which acts as examples in my podcast.
I used a Donald Trump’ twitter account as I mentioned on how politicians use social media to engage with the public.
Process of making Podcast:
Once I completed writing the script, the next step I did was recording the script.
I used a Voice Memos application on my iPhone and then I transferred it to my computer to edit it. I’m editing my podcast with Audacity.
Before the editing process, I watched some YouTube video on how to convert the file format to WAV. I did this because Audacity does not directly accept the recording file from Voice Memos. After I watched few videos finally I able to convert the recording in the form.
Another problem that I face was the editing of the recording, I had so much struggle to edit my podcast. I had listened to podcast before, but this is my first time making a podcast. While editing the recording for this podcast, I learn that is not an easy task to be done and also it takes a long time to edit 6 minutes podcast. As I am not professional yet about editing a recoding, I spent almost 6 hours to edit my recording.
I spent quiet sometimes on searching for music that I think it is appropriate for my podcast. After I found the suitable music, I watched some YouTube video on how to download a
In the intro of my podcast, I used a music from SoundCloud which had a creative common licensed
Overall, making podcasts has given me new insights into how we can actually interact with other people through different types of social media medium. Not only the dissemination of photos or writing, but also conversations. This has been another great skill that I developed on this semester.
Please check my podcast to know how well have I done it.

Nowadays, most people will have social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and others application. In fact, at least people will have one of these no matter they like or dislike it. I am not very fond of Social media, but I have twitter as well as Instagram.
However, each platform has different purposes which making me confused with my identity online and offline. The identity we presenting online and offline could be different as Paul Longley Arthur claims that online identity has the ability to change the way we see ourselves and each other as it is easy to be manipulated by individual subjects or by the others at any time (Smith S & Watson J 2014 p.83).
For example, people who knew me in real live, follow me on Instagram and twitter will have different view of my identity. It is because, my identity on twitter knowns as Student in Deakin College.
Here are examples of how I use twitter:
FILM THAT REPRESENT SOCIAL MEDIA Positive films tend to have balanced view on social media (shown in A Perfect Date). "we need to take the best of previous approaches and rework them to at to a changing environment" told by David Gaunttett.https://t.co/JEXegwGSTx#ALM101DC
Ariana Grande appears to engage with the world of social Media, and she identifies with Marshalls public private self of “exposure of the individual life.” (Marshall, 2010 p44)#ALM101DCpic.twitter.com/rKJ9qoYhu3
While, I set my identity as a person who is excited about everything and happy in Instagram, as I only share my daily activities, and all the good things. However, in reality, I tend to be quiet towards people who I’m not close to and serious which creating my identity as a lonely person. All of these had made me to have different identities online and offline.
What kind of persona do I build on Instagram?
Although I have multiple online identity, but I usually try to keep one persona on each platform as possible. I have been using Instagram since I was 13 and I usually share my daily life on it.According to Marshall, Barbour & Moore (2019 p.2) the notion of persona is best describing as the new technologically mediated but naturalised identity which we inhabit individually and collectively.
As I mentioned above, I am using Instagram to share my daily routine and also all the activities I enjoying such as food that I have eaten it and places that I visited during vacation so that others will try the food and visit the place.
Figure 1. Arc de Triomphe at France (Vania(1) 2017)
Since few years ago I have been shared all of these, but last year, one question comes across my mind ‘Am I the same person?’ this question has made me to create different persona on Instagram. Now, I tend to be quieter on Instagram and do not much engage online’s activities just like my behaviour in reality.
How do I formed and maintain Network online?
Kumar B (2019) wrote that “Networking today is about establishing meaningful relationships with people to help you further your own career or pursue a venture by collaborating with others.” Which means that the relationship or network we are building online can be a part of our future career as we will be benefited from it.
However, I don’t really care about building a network online as I am using my Instagram as my personal account and I following people who I want to follow, such as friends, family and also celebrities.
Figure 3. Vania Following list (2020)
I’m only allowing some people to be my followers, such as people I already know or a new friend I’ve met in real life, to be my followers on Instagram.
Most of the time I’m going to check their Instagram profile to find out more about them and whether I can trust them. Then I’ll see their feed or story to find out whether or not we have anything in common, such as interest or School.
If we have something in common, we can talk about it and even build a small group chat. Then we also can invite others who have the same subject with us to discuss together.
At the same time, I’m also trying to preserve my privacy while maintaining my relationship with my friends.
Keeping my online identity safe is important because it prevents identity theft and protects my financial information. That’s why I need to find a balance between social networks and my personal information online.
For me, I’m using the Social Networking Site (SNS) is for entertainment and to have fun with my friends as we can discuss our interests and keep up to date with each other.
I don’t really use SNS as a platform to start a business or something professional. It’s because I’m not really interested in it, and actually, I still simply can not trust the people I have met online. However, it makes my life easier, especially to communicate with a friend and family who are separated from me.
